Developed in Southern Africa by European settlers in the 17th century, by crossing their hunting dogs with the native Khoikhoi dogs, known for their distinctive ridge of hair along their spine. They were used to track and hold lions at bay, earning them the nickname "Lion Dog."

Possess a muscular, well-balanced physique, with their most distinctive feature being the ridge of hair running down their spine in the opposite direction. Their short, dense coat ranges from light wheaten to red wheaten, and they typically have a black nose.
