The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has a long history as a versatile farm dog in Ireland, used for hunting vermin and guarding livestock. It wasn't officially recognized until the 1930s, believed to share common ancestry with the Irish Terrier and Kerry Blue Terrier. It was officially recognized by the Irish Kennel Club in 1937.
