π History & Origin
A relatively new breed, originating in Louisiana, USA, in 1972 from a spontaneous mutation in a litter of Rat Terriers, resulting in a hairless puppy. Bred selectively to establish the hairless trait and recognized as a distinct breed.
πͺ Physical Features
Small to medium-sized, muscular and agile. Hairless body (though a coated variety exists) with smooth, soft skin. Can come in various skin colors and patterns. Erect ears, expressive eyes.
π§ Deep Personality
Highly intelligent, curious, and outgoing. Very affectionate with their families and generally good with children and other pets with proper introduction. Energetic and playful, but can be prone to barking. Good alert dogs. Due to lack of hair, they need protection from sun and cold.
π₯ Health & Lifespan
Generally healthy, with a lifespan of 14-16 years. Specific concerns include skin care (sunburn, acne), dental issues (some hairless dogs have missing teeth), and patellar luxation.
π Training & Activities
Highly intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train with positive reinforcement. Excel in dog sports like agility. Early socialization is important to temper their terrier instincts.
π Living Conditions
Excellent apartment dwellers due to their size and low shedding, as long as their exercise needs are met. Require indoor living and protection from extreme weather. Thrive on being part of the family.
