The Australian Kelpie was developed in Australia in the late 19th century from descendants of Scottish Collies. They were bred to possess excellent working ability and endurance to efficiently herd sheep across vast Australian landscapes. The name 'Kelpie' is said to originate from a water spirit in Scottish mythology.
