π History & Origin
The Azawakh originated in the Sahara Desert and Sahel regions of West Africa, specifically the Azawakh Valley in Mali and Niger. For thousands of years, they lived with Tuareg nomads, serving as ancient sighthounds for hunting gazelles and guarding livestock. They adapted perfectly to the harsh desert environment and were revered as precious companions and hunting partners by the tribes. They were first introduced to Europe in the 1970s.
