π History & Origin
The Irish Wolfhound is an ancient breed from Ireland, with records dating back to 391 BC. They were used by Celtic warriors for hunting wolves and bears, and their bravery and massive size were legendary. With the extinction of wolves in Ireland in the 17th century, the breed faced near disappearance. However, thanks to the efforts of Captain George Graham in the late 19th century, the breed was revived and established its modern form.

Irish Wolfhounds are among the tallest dog breeds in the world, with males standing at least 81 cm and females at least 76 cm. Weights are typically 54 kg+ for males and 48 kg+ for females. Their rough, wiry coat comes in various colors, including grey, brindle, red, black, and white. They possess a long, muscular body, a deep chest, and a proud stance that accentuates their dignity. Their long tail is slightly curved and carried low.

Despite their massive size, Irish Wolfhounds possess an incredibly gentle and loving personality. They are extremely devoted to their families and are patient and affectionate with children and other pets. While they may be reserved with strangers initially, they become very friendly once they accept someone. They are independent thinkers but tend to be eager to please their owners. The average lifespan of an Irish Wolfhound is relatively short, 6-8 years. They are susceptible to common large-breed issues like hip and elbow dysplasia, and heart diseases (especially dilated cardiomyopathy). Similar to Scottish Deerhounds, they have a high risk of Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat), so rest after meals and small, frequent feedings are essential. They also have a higher incidence of cancers like osteosarcoma, requiring regular health check-ups and careful management.

Irish Wolfhounds are intelligent and eager to please, but due to their immense size, consistent and firm training from a young age is essential. Positive reinforcement training is most effective, and socialization is crucial for harmonious interaction with other dogs. While their activity level decreases as adults, they require ample exercise during their growth phase. Daily regular walks combined with opportunities to expend energy in a spacious area are necessary.

Due to their enormous size, Irish Wolfhounds are absolutely unsuitable for apartment living. A home with ample indoor space and a large, securely fenced yard is essential. While surprisingly calm and quiet indoors, they require sufficient space to move around furniture. They are susceptible to hot weather, and especially as puppies, excessive exercise should be avoided to protect their growing joints. They deeply value time spent with their families.
