The Leonberger was created in the mid-19th century in Leonberg, Germany, by Heinrich Essig, the city's mayor. He aimed to breed a dog that resembled the lion on Leonberg's crest, by crossing Newfoundlands, St. Bernards, and Great Pyrenees. The breed quickly gained popularity among European royalty and nobility, serving as excellent companions and working dogs.

The Leonberger is a large dog with a massive build and muscular body. Its abundant, long double coat comes in various lion-like colors such as golden, reddish-brown, and red, with the hair around the neck particularly resembling a lion's mane.
