π History & Origin
The Portuguese Water Dog is an ancient breed originating from Portugal's Algarve region. It was used by fishermen to herd fish into nets, retrieve lost tackle, and carry messages between boats and shore. Nearly extinct in the 20th century, it was saved by Dr. Vasco Bensaude and later gained popularity in the US.
πͺ Physical Features
A medium-sized, robust, and muscular dog. It has two coat types: wavy or curly, both non-shedding (hypoallergenic). Colors vary including black, white, brown, or combinations. Features webbed feet, making it an excellent swimmer.
π§ Deep Personality
Highly intelligent, independent, and eager to please. Can be stubborn, requiring mental and physical stimulation. Excellent family dogs, good with children and other pets if socialized early. Can be protective.

Generally a healthy breed. Prone to hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), juvenile dilated cardiomyopathy, GM1 gangliosidosis (a lysosomal storage disease), and Addison's disease. Average lifespan is 10-14 years.

Very trainable due to high intelligence and eagerness to please. Needs early socialization and consistent, positive reinforcement. Benefits from dog sports like agility, obedience, and especially dock diving. Requires lots of exercise.
π Living Conditions
Best with active families who can provide ample exercise and mental stimulation. Can live in apartments if daily vigorous exercise is provided, but a house with a yard is preferred. Loves water.
