The Sapsali is a native Korean breed with records dating back to the Unified Silla Kingdom. Its name, 'Sapsal,' means 'to ward off evil spirits or misfortune,' and it was traditionally believed to possess spiritual powers to repel evil. During the Japanese colonial period, they faced mass slaughter for their fur, pushing them to the brink of extinction. However, a restoration project began in the 1980s, and they are now designated as a natural monument and protected.

A medium to large-sized dog, its most distinctive feature is its long, thick coat covering its entire body. Coat colors vary, including yellow, black, and grey, with facial hair often covering the eyes, giving it a mystical appearance. It has a sturdy, well-balanced physique and semi-dropped ears.
