Origins & History: The Miracle of North Carolina & American Gemology
In 1879, American mineralogist William Earl Hidden was exploring North Carolina under contract with Thomas Edison to locate platinum for light bulb filaments. While traversing Alexander County, local farm boys showed him striking emerald-green crystals plucked from freshly tilled soil. Recognizing an unprecedented chromium-rich lithium pyroxene distinct from emerald, he documented it to global acclaim. The gem was christened Hiddenite, and the rural town was permanently renamed Hiddenite, North Carolina, remaining a revered pilgrimage site for gem lovers.
