Origins & History: Vanadis the Norse Goddess & Moroccan Desert Marvels
First spotted in 1801 in Mexico by Andrés Manuel del Río, the mineral was fully characterized in 1830 when Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström isolated a new metallic element that produced breathtaking multicolored compounds. He named it Vanadium after Vanadis, the Norse goddess of beauty and fecundity, from which Vanadinite took its name. In the late 20th century, the abandoned lead mine of Mibladen in Morocco yielded spectacular ruby-red hexagonal plates on white barite matrix, transforming Vanadinite into one of the most celebrated aesthetic minerals on Earth.
